Level 4 Magazine Examples

Things I need to do to achieve a Level 4 (A grade) in the construction section of my coursework

- Include different framing of shots and a variety of shot distances
- Use material appropriate to the genre and the target audience
- Mise-en-scene awareness (colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting)
- Manipulating photographs- cropping, resizing...
- Language and mode of address suitable for genre and target audience
- Follow stereotypical conventions of layout of magazines, considering target audience
- Use a variety of fonts and text size throughout the product
- Using ICT appropriately for the task

Looking at examples of how students have achieved Level 4 for your brief and identifying what they have done well

Drowned Insound

The 'Drowned Insound' magazine uses a variety of shots through the magazine. The font cover uses a close up, accompanied by two smalled close ups. The contents page uses a mid close up of one artist and then a further mid close up of the band featured. The double page spread includes a mid-shot covering the whole of one page.
I think that the target audience for this magazine is older teenagers/young adults. The material included is appropriate for this and also for the task set- of a music magazine.
Mise-en-scene has been used as the colour of the images is striking and bold. Lighting is used particularly well on the double page spread with the mid-shot image.
The images have clearly been cropped and re sized for use within the magazine. However, I feel the image on the top of the contents page (accompanying the letter from the editor feature) is cropped too harshly on the sides and looks cropped off to much.
It has used many different variety's of fonts and text sizes. There are also many different eye catching colours used. The front cover is very busy and uses alot of different colours which makes it stand out to the readers and makes it bold of shelves.

Do you think you will be able to achieve a Level 4 for your proposed magazine? Think particularly about your ideas for photography - are you going to use a range of shot types? Are the photographs going to be relevant? Have you thought about your use of mise-en-scene? Think about your ideas for your magazine - is the language and mode of address suited to the genre and target audience? Does your layout follow convention? Are you going to use a range of suitable fonts?

I think to achieve a Level 4 for my proposed magazine I need to develop my draft layouts further. After looking at examples of magazines I need to change my layouts more to suit a more conventional magazine/music magazine layout. I have already planned to use a range of suitable fonts
I am going to plan my photography in more detail, include shot types and mise-en-scene details.
